WHY I SERVE:
“I have a long-term commitment to serving the Carrboro community, I will continue to work toward understanding and addressing the issues that are important to community members. I plan to continue to advocate for an affordable and equitable community where everyone is welcome.
Barbara M Foushee is a Senior Technologist in a molecular oncology lab. She has spent her entire career working in labrotoary sciences. She was elected to the Board of Aldemen on November 7, 2017 and her term expires in December 2021. Barbara has been serving on the Town of Carrboro's Human Services Advisory Board for the past 3 years, most recently in the position of Vice-Chair. She has also served on the OWASA Board of Directors since 2015 (appointed by the Orange County Commissioners) where her responsibilities include adopting the annual budget, setting rates, fees and charges based on cost-of-principle and making policy decisions. Her community inolvement includes serving as the Branch Secretary for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP; Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.-Eta Phi Zeta Graduate Chapte; Undergraduate Advisor to the Omega Iota Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at UNC-CH; Blue Ribbon Mentor; Member of the Order of the Eastern Star, PHA Randolph Chapter #185; and Past Chair of the community awareness and political action ministry at First Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, NC.
Barbara grew up in eastern North Carolina and has lived in Carrboro since 1991. SHe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from historic St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, NC.
Barbara is the recipient of the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award that is given annually by the local NAACP branch. For the past 2 years, she has been awarded the Finer Womanhood Award from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and she was also recognized by the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Community Involvement as Outstanding Alumnae Advisor of the Year (Fall and Spring 2016).
Barbara is married to former Carrboro Alderman Braxton Foushee.
