[ARCHIVED] Town of Carrboro July 4th Events

July Fourth 2021

The Town of Carrboro is excited to announce a return to limited in-person events in celebration of July 4th.  Due to recommendations regarding large-scale public gatherings as the event was being planned, the large traditional in-person event will not be held this year.  However, we will be presenting the following live and virtual activities:

Annual Reading of Frederick Douglass' Essay

Mayor Lydia Lavelle will host our eighth annual Community Reading of Frederick Douglass' essay, "The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro."

This year, the event will be held outdoors at Carrboro Town Hall, 301 W. Main St., from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 4.  The community reading will also available on our YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/carrboronc..

In 1852, Frederick Douglass, one of our nation’s greatest orators and abolitionists, was asked to speak at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In his provocative speech, Douglass said, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”
