Mayor Damon Seils has proclaimed Saturday, April 23, to be Orange-Chatham African American Cultural Festival Day in Carrboro.
The Orange-Chatham African American Cultural Festival will be held by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, on Saturday, April 23. It will be held on the grounds of the Chapel Hill Carrboro-City Schools Central Office located on South Merritt Mill Road.
The festival will promote and celebrate African American heritage and culture by showcasing African American arts, music, dance, drama, and poetry and their influence on local, national, and international arts and culture.
The inaugural festival will honor the life and legacy of North Carolina native Martha Flowers, a world-class, Julliard-trained, trailblazing opera singer who built a life in Chapel Hill after becoming the first Black faculty member in UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Music and later as a beloved voice teacher in the broader Chapel Hill and Carrboro community.
"I encourage residents to attend the festival, and to learn about the life, artistry, and legacy of the late Martha Flowers," Mayor Seils said.
