On July 21, 2023, human remains were found in a wooded area near Hanford Drive in Carrboro. Investigators worked with the Medical Examiner’s Office to positively identify the deceased person as Daishi Tanabe. The cause of death is still under investigation, and there is currently no evidence to suggest that Tanabe’s death is the result of a criminal act. There is not an ongoing threat to community safety. Additional information will be released as appropriate.
