[ARCHIVED] South Greensboro St. Closing Extended until June 16, 2017

Greensboro - Phase II Closure

The NCDOT’s closure of a portion of South Greensboro Street to through traffic between Merritt Mill Road and Old Pittsboro Road in Carrboro has experienced delays due to recent heavy rain events and an unanticipated utility conflict. The revised anticipated date to re-open the road is June 16 with final project completion anticipated by July 14. Pedestrian travel and access to adjacent properties will continue to be accommodated. Weather or unexpected site conditions may further impact project completion.

A SIGNED DETOUR ROUTE will remain in place. Travelers should also consider W. Main Street and Merritt Mill Road as alternate routes to avoid the work zone.

The road will remain open to local traffic between Main Street and the southern end of Old Pittsboro Road to enable access to all residences and businesses in the area. Pedestrian travel through the work zone and access to adjacent properties is being accommodated throughout the duration of the project. The Chapel Hill Transit J bus route is temporarily affected by the road closure, requiring changes to routes and stops. For additional bus route information, CLICK HERE.

All businesses are open and travelers and residents are encouraged to patronize those along S. Greensboro St., particularly restaurants within the detour zone.

Travelers are reminded to stay alert when approaching the work zone, watch for construction signs and changed conditions, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach your destination.

The road closure is necessary to facilitate the ongoing project to replace an existing undersized storm drain pipe with a larger aluminum arch culvert under South Greensboro Street in order to reduce the risk of flooding to the roadway and adjacent properties. This work is being coordinated with similar drainage upgrades being performed by the developers of the approved adjacent South Green development which, once completed, will further improve drainage in the area.

Please provide feedback to the Town on this closure and detour by completing a short survey.
