Ask Your Neighbors: Have you completed the census?

How to Identify a Census Taker (English)

Census takers are in Orange County visiting households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau will cease data collection efforts on Sept. 30, a month earlier than the original extended deadline.

Orange County ranks second among North Carolina counties in response rates, with 70% of households responding, according to the latest stats from the Census Bureau. In Carrboro, the overall response rate is 73%. Responses are needed from every household. Please ask your neighbors if they have completed the census - and pass along this information!

Much of the funding that comes from the census helps the most vulnerable among us. It provides health care, education, food and nutrition programs, housing and childcare for families. We need an equitable and complete count since the census has a big impact on the services that Carrboro and its neighborhoods receive. Every person not counted is a loss in our community of more than $1,800 annually in state and federal funding.

Respond now

Residents can avoid the knock from a census worker by responding to the census online or via phone. If you respond online, you must complete the census in one sitting as progress cannot be saved. Respond by:

  • Visiting my2020census.gov to respond online with your address even if you did not receive an invitation from the Census Bureau.
  • Calling 844-330-2020 for English, 844-468-2020 for Spanish or 844-467-2020 for a telephone display device. Representatives are available daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Respond at food distribution sites

Census workers also will be on site at select food distributions throughout Orange County through the end of September to help anyone fill out their census on the spot. In Carrboro, they will be at distributions from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at:

  • Carrboro High School, 201 Rock Haven Road – Aug. 27

Completing the census takes about 10 minutes. The survey asks for the name, sex, age, date of birth, race/ethnicity and relationship of everyone in your household and whether you rent or own your home. See a sample questionnaire on the 2020 Census website.

Additional food distributions where census workers will be available include:

  • Efland Cheeks Community Center ― 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at 117 Richmond Road in Mebane
  • Efland Cheeks Elementary School ― 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 4401 Fuller Road in Efland
  • Eubanks Road Park and Ride ― 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 2000 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill

Additional information

Census data determines federal funding for many programs that assist the county’s most vulnerable residents, noted Renee Price, vice chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners and chair of the Complete Count Committee.

“School nutrition programs, services for the elderly, education programs and many others rely on census data to determine each community’s share of funds,” Price said. “An accurate count with everyone participating ensures that Orange County receives its share of federal and state assistance.”
