[ARCHIVED] We're Planting Trees in Carrboro!

We're looking for volunteers to plant trees

Carrboro, NC – Volunteers will pick up their shovels from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, to plant trees in Henry “Hank” Anderson III Community Park at 302 N Carolina Hwy 54 W, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

The tree planting is part of a town project to restore a stream buffer and provide shade, beauty, and environmental benefits to the community. Made possible through a $4,000 grant from the NC Urban Forest Council and its Legacy Tree Fund grant program, Carrboro will be contributing toward the program’s statewide goal of planting 10,000 trees in 10 years. In Carrboro, volunteers will plant 28 trees, including tulip poplar, eastern redbud, flowering dogwood, bald cypress, river birch, water tupelo, and fringetree species.

“Carrboro recognizes the value of healthy and resilient urban forests to the community,” said Mayor Lydia Lavelle. “With this funding, the Town hopes to provide habitat for wildlife, improve water quality, sequester carbon, and enhance quality of life for all residents.”

The Legacy Tree Fund provides funding to communities for tree planting projects that help educate citizens about the importance of trees, the role they play in improving air and water quality, reducing energy costs, increasing real estate values, providing wildlife habitat, and making our communities more beautiful.

“Through the educational and tree planting efforts of North Carolina Urban Forest Council’s Legacy Tree Fund program, residents across the state can enjoy the aesthetic, environmental, and economic benefits of healthy trees,” said Barbara Fair, board member of the NC Urban Forest Council.

Carrboro has a track record of making plans and taking actions to save energy, reduce consumption and protect the environment while also increasing levels of citizen wellbeing. Carrboro is working to implement a municipal Energy and Climate Protection Plan as well as a Community Climate Action Plan. Both plans contain goals related to urban forestry and ecosystem protection and enhancement. Carrboro is also a proud member of the Tree City USA and Bee City USA initiatives. For more about the climate action in Carrboro, visit www.townofcarrboro.org.

To volunteer at the event, please contact Laura Janway, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, at 919-918-7342 or ljanway@townofcarrboro.org.
