Carrboro This Week

Carrboro This Week Nov 25 2020

Happy Thanksgiving!

We wish you all a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

In observance of the holiday, Town of Carrboro offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27. We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Phase 3

North Carolina Tightens Existing Mask Requirements and Enforcement

Everyone is advised to celebrate Thanksgiving only with the people they live with.

If you gather for the holidays: Keep it small, keep it outdoors, and wear a mask at all times. Remember your 3Ws: Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Wait 6 feet from others. In addition, stay home away from others if sick.

Gov. Roy Cooper has issued additional COVID-19 safety measures to tighten mask requirements and enforcement as cases continue to rise rapidly in North Carolina and across the country. Executive Order No. 180 goes into effect at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, and runs through Dec. 11.

"I have a stark warning for North Carolinians today: We are in danger," Cooper said. "This is a pivotal moment in our fight against the coronavirus. Our actions now will determine the fate of many."

Carrboro Connects community and 150 people via zoom!

About 150 members of the Carrboro community came out virtually on Thursday, Nov. 19, for a workshop to launch our town’s new comprehensive plan, Carrboro Connects

An evening mixed with entertainment, learning and sharing covered topics such as racial equity, climate change, transportation and economic development. Everyone is committed to an inclusive planning process to lay out the Town’s goals and visions for the next 20 years.

Carrboro People Photo Album

Carrboro People Photo Album

In time for Thanksgiving, the Town of Carrboro has created a Carrboro People Photo Album at https://youtu.be/yw3S7a65nLs

Thanks to everyone who sent a photo of themselves, their pod, or family pets to be included. Some folks tagged us #IamCarrboro and via @CarrboroTownGov. Special thanks to Rafe Grimball for sending standout images of Carrboro people from his gallery (grimballphotography.com or @rafe_g).

“Many of us haven’t seen each other in a while, due to the pandemic,” said Mayor Lydia Lavelle. “This is a simple way to catch up by sharing a snapshot to show your community how you’re doing. The faces of our community at this moment in time will surely be interesting to look back on, much like photos in a family album.”

The album debuted at the kickoff of Carrboro Connects, the comprehensive planning effort for our town. Learn more at carrboroconnects.org

Responding to interest expressed to keep it going and include more people, we will expand the album! Feel free to send your photos to Communications Manager Catherine Lazorko at clazorko@townofcarrboro.org If you submitted photos after Nov. 19, please look for them in a new and updated album soon!

Help Select Top Strategies for COVID-19 Recovery

The Orange County Long-Term Recovery Group has identified potential strategies for recovering from COVID-19 and needs your input on which strategies best meet the community’s needs.

Community members are asked to take a 10-minute online survey between Nov. 24 and Dec. 11.

To take the survey in English, Spanish or Chinese, visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/OrangeNCForward_A

To take the survey in Burmese or Karen, visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/OrangeNCForward_B

The survey contains a draft list of recovery strategies and asks the public to evaluate the importance of each. Survey results will be used to determine the priority order of strategies in a long-term recovery and transformation plan being developed by the Long-Term Recovery Group. The group is a partnership of nearly 150 community stakeholders, Orange County and the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough.

Small Business Saturday in Carrboro

Mayor Lydia Lavelle has proclaimed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday in Carrboro.

“This year, more than ever, supporting our local businesses is even more necessary to their survival; support is easily accomplished in-person or virtually, and by purchase of items or by gift cards for future use,” Mayor Lavelle said. “I urge all Carrboro residents to make an extra effort to support our local businesses in Carrboro on this day, especially during this challenging year.”

The Town of Carrboro historically has supported efforts to support our small businesses. These efforts are reflected in the Town’s Local Living Economy Task Force report, which describes efforts to assist small businesses in Carrboro during this difficult time, including the town’s emergency loan funds for businesses and non-profits; and allowances for flexibility in outdoor seating, signage, and parking.

Advocacy groups across the country, including the Carrboro Business Alliance, have endorsed Saturday, Nov. 28, as Small Business Saturday.

Please consider supporting the local economy this holiday season. There are more than 385 small businesses in Carrboro, making up 95% of all businesses in town.

Care to Share in Carrboro

Mayor Lydia Lavelle proclaimed Thursday, Nov. 19, as Care to Share Day to help raise funds for the Care to Share bill-assistance program administered by OWASA and the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service.

This year’s Care to Share Day will, like most things in 2020, look much different than it has before, but the need is even greater this year.
