Frontline Essential Workers Now Eligible for Vaccination

Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. announced that additional frontline essential workers in Group 3 will be eligible for vaccinations beginning March 3.

The expedited timeline follows the approval of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine and an expected increase in vaccine supply to North Carolina.

“The state and our providers continue to work extremely hard to get people vaccinated in a way that’s fast and fair,” said Gov. Cooper. “The third vaccine and improving vaccine supply will help us get more people vaccinated more quickly. Our essential frontline workers have remained on the job throughout this pandemic and I am grateful for their work.”

Learn About Stream Restoration

The Town received a 2020 Legacy Tree Fund Grant from the NC Urban Forest Council to restore a stream buffer in Henry “Hank” Anderson III Community Park.

Attend a virtual presentation from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, March 6, to learn more about the stream restoration project and how it will help Carrboro meet ecosystem protection and enhancement goals of the 2017 Community Climate Action Plan. This plan is posted for review at https://www.townofcarrboro.org/DocumentCenter/View/4116/Community-Climate-Action-Plan

After the presentation, residents are invited to participate in a live stream restoration question-and-answer session with staff from the Town of Carrboro's Planning Department and Stormwater Utility.

Town of Carrboro Awards Business Loan to Tesoro

The Town of Carrboro has awarded a $60,000 business loan through its Revolving Loan Fund to Tesoro, a pasta-focused neighborhood restaurant slated to open this spring at 100 E. Weaver St.

The application from David Peretin, a managing member of Tesoro, was reviewed and recommended for approval by the Economic Sustainability Commission pending appropriate collateral to guarantee the loan. The Town Council approved the recommendation on March 2.

The application describes Tesoro’s vision to create a welcoming gathering place for all members of the community providing comforting food and service in a charming, quaint setting.

Mayor Lydia Lavelle

March is Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month in the Town of Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle.

All residents are encouraged to celebrate this observance, to learn more about the important achievements of women throughout history, and to find inspiration in the stories of the courageous and steadfast women who fought to achieve equity and justice, and in doing so, changed the world.

“Carrboro is proud to recognize and honor the history and contributions of women in Carrboro and throughout the nation,” Mayor Lavelle said.

Some interesting facts about women in Carrboro include:

  • According to Census.Gov (https://www.census.gov), Carrboro, North Carolina in 2019 had a population of 21,190, of which 54.3% identified as female.
  • Since the town’s founding, women have played significant roles in Carrboro’s economic, cultural, and political development.
  • In Carrboro’s earliest days, while men worked in the local mills, women and girls known as “Toppers” or “Loopers” installed looping machines in their homes, allowing them to support the production of clothing while also tending to domestic responsibilities.
  • In 1975, Ruth West was the first woman elected as Mayor of Carrboro.
