The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department will conduct a live burn on the Carrboro Public Works property, 7917 Old NC-86, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3.
In addition to providing fire training, research on carcinogen exposures will be conducted during the live burn by NC State University, Baylor University, Florida International University, and RTI International. The researchers are also studying protective firefighter gear and rehabilitation of firefighters exposed to elevated temperatures.
The training sessions will be conducted following NFPA 1403 – Live Fire Training Standard as well as the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. This type of training is permitted by North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) through an extensive permitting process. Burning is permissible only as a fire training exercise with the fire department present during the burning.
