Weather permitting, beginning Monday, March 6, 2017, The North Carolina Department of Transportation will close a portion of South Greensboro Street to through traffic between Merritt Mill Road and Old Pittsboro Road in Carrboro. The road closure is expected to be in place for 60 days. A SIGNED DETOUR ROUTE will be provided. The road will be open to local traffic between Main Street and the southern end of Old Pittsboro Road to enable access to residences and businesses in the area. Pedestrian travel through the work zone and access to adjacent properties will be accommodated throughout the duration of the project. The Chapel Hill Transit J bus route will be temporarily affected by the road closure, requiring changes to routes and stops. For additional bus route information, CLICK HERE. Travelers should consider W. Main Street and Merritt Mill Road as alternate routes to avoid the work zone.
Travelers are reminded to stay alert when approaching the work zone, watch for construction signs and changed conditions, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach your destination.
The road closure is necessary to facilitate the ongoing project to replace an existing undersized storm drain pipe with a larger aluminum arch culvert under South Greensboro Street in order to reduce the risk of flooding to the roadway and adjacent properties. This work is being coordinated with similar drainage upgrades being performed by the developers of the approved adjacent South Green development which, once completed, will further improve drainage in the area.”
